Best Place to Study Abroad in Spain?

Someone please inform me. When I went to Mexico and said that I would possibly study in Madrid, I had people screaming, "NO, NO go to Barcelona!" I understand that Barcelona is the Paris of Spain and is very Cosmopolitan, but they also speak Catalan. So I'm wondering, what are your experiences in Spain or where is the best place to study abroad in Spain?
